Visa

Yachting is one of the most internationally diverse industries in the world and crew visa is always one of the hottest topics, especially in the Med, USA and Caribbean.

Whether or not you need a visa to work on a yacht depends on a number of factors, including the country in which the yacht is registered, the country in which you are a citizen, and the terms of your employment.

In general, if you are a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), you will not need a visa to work on a yacht that is registered in an EU or EEA member state.

However, if you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country, you may need a visa to work on a yacht that is registered in an EU/EEA member state, depending on the specific laws and regulations that apply.

If the yacht is registered in a country outside of the EU/EEA, the visa requirements will depend on the specific laws and regulations of that country and on your citizenship. Some countries may require all foreign workers, including yacht crew members, to obtain a work visa, while others may have more flexible policies.

The key documents for all crew:

– STCW Basic Safety Training: Required regardless of nationality. Ensure your certificate is from a recognised MCA-approved or flag-state-approved training provider.

– ENG1 (or equivalent medical certificate): The ENG1 is the UK standard, but most flag states accept an equivalent seafarer medical certificate. Check with your yacht’s flag state.

– Valid passport: This is essential. Check your expiry date – many vessels require at least 12 months validity.

Visa requirements by operating region:

– Mediterranean (EU): Non-Schengen nationals need a Schengen visa for vessels operating in European waters. Non-EU nationals on EU-flagged vessels may also need a right to work in the EU. Your employer is responsible for visa costs under MLC 2006.

– USA and Caribbean: Non-US nationals need a B1/B2 visa to crew on vessels entering US waters. This is one of the most commonly required documents in yachting and should be obtained before you start job searching if you intend to work in this region.

– Worldwide private programmes: Varies by destination. The vessel’s captain or management company will advise on destination-specific requirements.
